Questions and Answers: Hand and feet Nail

Q. Weak Nails?

A. Try using a nail strengthener like will help strengthen and keep nails healthy. We carry Nail Envy by O.P.I. and The NailTek program. Also, weekly manicures are a great help.

Q. How can I prevent peeling, breaking, and splitting?
A. Exposure to water is most often the culprit here- surprisingly, the more you soak, the drier the nail becomes, weakening over time. Detergents in soaps, household cleansers, and some nail polish removers can also have adverse effects. Prevent further damage by wearing gloves during chores. After hand-washing, apply a rich moisturizer to nails to replace the natural oils that water washes away. Using a polish or a cuticle oil (such as Avoplex by OPI) will provide a protective shield.

Q. What's the best way to manicure my nails?
A. File in one direction only- sawing back and forth can cause splitting. Nails are strongest when you shape them into an oval. The pointier you make them, the likelier they are to break.

Q. What do those tiny white marks mean?
A. It's a myth that these flecks indicate a vitamin deficiency. More likely, they're the result of a minor injury and will disappear as the nail grows. But watch out for dark marks. If you recently hurt your hand (say in a car door), don't worry. But if not, and you see a black, brown, or purple band on your nail, it could be a sign of skin cancer. See a doctor right away.

Q. Athlete's feet?
A. Only treated by a physician.

Q. How often do I need a manicure?
A. I recommend a weekly manicure.

Q. What does paraffin do for your skin and nails?
A. Paraffin has intensive moisture therapy that nourishes skin and cuticles. The penetrating heat increases circulation, soothes aching joints and relaxes stiff muscles.

Q. Do you recommend gel or acrylic nails?
A. We only do gel nails because the protein helps your nails, they look more natural and the process is odorless.

Q. What products do you use?
A. O.P.I., Essie, Creative, and Cuccio.

Q. Is the staff certified?
A. All Christiaan staff are Rhode Island licensed and certified.

Riki Vieira on the road, “What I do on week ends and travel“

Riki is a stylist/colorist at Christiaan Salon. Riki is also a member of TIGI Talent Team and the TIGI Creative Force.

When I’m not at Christiaan’s, I work for TiGi.
But what does it really entail? Well what I do is, I'm a color specialist, I also do wardrobe.

We did a launch for our new collection called Remix at a show at Metro in Toronto, Canada.

It's a really great collection and very salon friendly. The shapes are pretty classic with a bit of a twist. As for the color, the techniques are pretty fast with an over all result, letting clients ditch that full head highlight.

Here's a sneak peak at our latest collection for TiGi called REMIX.

New! “Simply Straight (Smooth) Brazilian Keratin Treatment.” by Sacha

Shannon and I are certified in the “Bio Ionic Retexturizing” and the salon also offers other hair straightening systems.

In early December, Shannon and I will become certified in “Simply Straight Brazilian Keratin Treatment (Also known as Simply Smooth).” This system is different because it is formaldehyde free and is not a chemical process. The keratin is derived from human hair and from botanicals and is used to smooth the hair and give it lots of shine.

Another huge difference is that this process is temporary, and for those with very curly hair, your hair can be styled curly. The process will remove frizz and give a smoother texture that can be blown smooth in half the time. It lasts around 12-16 weeks. During this time period your natural texture will slowly return. This provides a less strict maintenance schedule and does not lock anyone into a style. Another great factor is that it can be used on hair that has been relaxed, permed, or colored.

For those clients who have let their hair naturally go grey it can be a great tool to tame the unruly texture. It is also a great solution for hair that is damaged because it will restructure and recondition the hair fibers. Although it is great for curly, frizzy, or damaged hair it can be used on any hair type for incredible shine.

The process takes about one and a half to two hours, and it is possible to schedule a color the same day if needed. If the hair is not colored that day it is recommended to wait ten days. For maintenance the client will want to use the shampoo and conditioner to prolong the life of the service. Once the certifications are received, clients will be able to book complimentary consultations to ensure the service is suitable for them.

Please contact the salon in mid-December for a consultation. 401-521-5050
